Green party Endorses Sandra Hester for School Board

September 6th, 2004

The Greater New Orleans Green Party proudly endorses the Independent candidacy of Sandra Hester for Orleans Parish School Board in District 3.

Sandra Hester is a committed grassroots advocate for education reform in Orleans Parish and Louisiana. Ms. Hester is the parent of 2 children who attend Orleans Parish Public Schools, which is atypical of the current members of the Orleans Parish School Board.

She has testified numerous times before the State legislature on behalf of children and parents. She is the Founder and Executive Director of the Parent Empowerment Center. She produces and hosts her own weekly cable access television show, the Hester Report, in which she employs political theatrics to expose the woes of the Orleans Parish School System. She is a regular attendee at School Board meetings, and is infamous for her tireless advocacy against high stakes testing, substandard school conditions and racial inequality that permeates the Orleans Parish School System.

Ms Hester is a graduate of Francis T. Nicholls Senior High School. She holds a Paralegal Certificate and a B.A. degree in Political Science from University of New Orleans. She also attended Loyola University Law School.

In addition, she was a participant at the "Effects of High Stakes Testing on Children" forum at Dowling College, in Long Island, NY. In March 2004, she served as a Panelist at "Activists for Change: Women in the Trenches", a symposium held at Dillard University. She currently serves as a PTO Magnet School Ombudsman for the Jean Gordon Elementary School. She helped draft the New Orleans Public School Student, Family and Community Handbook. She was the first Vice President of People for Better Public Schools and is a member of Parents for Educational Justice. She also volunteers as a Girl Scout Leader.

Sandra Hester received the Avery C. Alexander Social Action Outstanding Service Award. In addition, she received the Trailblazer Unsung Hero Award. She was also awarded with Dillard University's Lyceum Award for grassroots efforts in New Orleans.
